Gift Guide for the Junk Journaler!
I don’t know about you, but finding just the right gift for the right person (or artist!) can be frustrating. And since I know there are a LOT of people out there who don’t share our love of Junk Journaling – I thought doing a little gift guide might help some people out there find amazing gifts for us journalers and book makers!
I’m adding a little bit of what I covered in the video here, but if you really want the full effect, with show and tell, be sure to check out the video above!
First Things First – What is Junk Journaling?
If you’ve found this site looking for some ideas to get for the junk journaler in your life, you might be wondering: what is it? Well, it’s an art form that involved taking old things, new things, junky things and recycled things and putting them all together into a book or journal. Ok – I’ve really distilled it down to the bare minimum, but I thought it would help to have that info up front. If you’d really like to dig into this art form, you can see my blog post here.
Books – The No Brainer Gift
You gotta know that junk journalers love books. And mostly books we can take apart and put back together in our projects. Cool covers, old pages and interesting illustrations make great gifts for the junk journaler.
A word of caution – though – don’t plan to spend a ton of money on 1 book. Your junk journaler will not want to destroy something of value. If you can find thrifted books that might be headed to a trash heap, these are often the best books to grab for junk journal projects.
Here are some books you can get online – but if you are passing a thrift store or antique shop, take a look around and see what you can find that might not be delivered to your front door!
Tools of Our Trade
We use a lot of tools to make cuts, punch holes, sew and more – so giving tools to a junk journaler is always a great idea. If you know they are just starting out, finding tools they don’t have might be easier, but there’s plenty of tools to choose from that will definitely be useful.
- Die Cut Machine
- Frame Dies
- Big Bite Crop-o-dile
- Handheld Crop-o-dile
- Circle punches
- Tag punch
- Corner Rounder
- Tab punch board
- Field notes stamps
- Ledger stamps
- Paper Trimmer
- Fussy Cut scissors
- Score board
- Scoring tools
- Cinch machine
- Cutting mat
- Binding kit
New Supplies to Wow the Junk Journaler
While we use the term “Junk” a lot for this craft, you have to know that none of what we use is the true idea of junk. It’s ephemeral, it’s things others would throw out, but to us, it’s never junk. That being said, there are many supplies we buy brand spankin’ new to use in our journals.
These can include things like metal findings you might see in jewelry. Or tapes and fabrics to use as embellishments in a journal. If you know a theme your junk journaler is drawn to (ex – botanical, on the farm, French, Steampunk, birds), you will undoubtedly find supplies that fit these themes.
- Washi tape
- Fabric Washi tape
- Paper doilies
- Small vintage envelopes
- Glassine bags
- Manilla File Folders
- Sari ribbon
- Metal filigree
- Book plates
- Bulb pins
- Digital buttons cards (a freebie from me!)
- Digital DIY Cabinet Cards
Vintage Supply Treasure Hunt
I’ve listed a lot of things that can be found online or in normal places like book stores or craft shops, but some of the best gifts are truly vintage ephemera. You can look at places like Ebay and Etsy to find some junk journal ephemera kits, or you can take a long walk through an antique store or flea market and see what fun things you can find.
I’ve given you some ideas in the video, but even taking your junk journaler with you would be so much fun! Give them a budget and let them run wild. I know they will find a boat load of goodies to use in their projects.
Paper is Always a Good Idea
My last category is PAPER. I left this until last because you really can never have too much paper. And even if your junk journaler has a pack of paper already, having an exact duplicate will probably help!
Digital papers are also a fun idea for the junk journaler, and getting them a gift card to a shop that sells them would be a coveted gift, I have no doubt. And believe it or not (yes, I’m sure you knew it already), I sell digital papers! If you’d like a gift card to my shop so your junk journaler can grab some great kits, feel free to email me!
- Lady Lapis Digital Kit
- Locker tags kit
- Scrapbook paper packs
