What in the world is a Junk Journal?
You might already have an idea what a junk journal is. You might even know exactly what a junk journal is. And even if your answer is different than mine – it’s most likely – the right answer.
I really think the definition of a junk journal becomes a personal thing after you’ve made a few.
And many people have answered this question before, but because this isn’t rocket science (I’m sure you’re shocked to hear that 😂), the definition is pretty broad.
- They don’t all have to be made of junk mail or discarded paper.
- They don’t have to have a theme.
- They don’t have to include authentically vintage items.
- They don’t have to be vintage at all.
- They don’t have to be made to actually journal in.
- They don’t…
Well, you get the idea. But there’s one think I think all journal-makers could agree on – they are all works of art. Artist books, even. Which is just a fancy title for a book that is a piece of art. There are so many talented journal makers out there, and I believe they are creating art that you can page through, write in, discover tucks, secret pockets and even add to by putting in your own bits of ephemera. These journals and folios become a collaborative piece of art when they go from the artists hands into someone else’s and they add to it. I think they are so unique in this way.
Today I thought I’d talk a little bit about my definition of a junk journal. And take a little walk through a few I’ve made in the past.
